The Psychology of Company Greeting Cards At Each Stage – How To Delve Deeper?

Be it birthdays, anniversaries, or holidays – in the UK we just love exchanging greeting cards. In fact, sending and receiving illustrated greeting cards date back to as far as the early fifteenth century and they still make us smile to this day.

So, what makes them so special? With our 9 years of being in the industry, and having peeled back the layers, we have found that sending and receiving a simple card can work wonders for our mental and emotional well-being and in turn build on our relationships.

Greeting cards have a unique ability to evoke feelings of happiness and connection, making them a valuable tool when it comes to companies emotionally connecting with their clients or staff.

In this blog, we will delve into the different stages of exchanging corporate greeting cards and how it affects our relationships:

Stage 1 – Choosing The Card Design

The first stage is selecting the right design for your company branded greeting card. During this stage, the frontal lobe of the sender’s brain is activated. It’s the part of your brain that stores all the memories and thoughts about the recipient. While you are designing or choosing the card you want to send, think about that person and how you want to communicate to them. Do you want to be humorous? Pull at the heart strings? Or be authentic?

Now of course you have to remember the simple things like adding your logo to the front and selecting specific brand colour choices especially for bulk greeting cards for businesses.

The frontal lobe of your brain is also responsible for supporting the cognitive aspect of comparing, analysing, and deciding on the right design.

It is important to consider the quality of the card too, as that too will impact the first impression. If the card feels cheap and flimsy, it is likely that even with a wonderful the design it will be a major setback to impressing your client/staff and might even have a negative impact. This is because, it silently suggests they do not deserve something quality to appreciate them, but you’d rather cut corners, which in effect can de-value your recipient.

Stage 2 – What’s Inside?

Have you ever received a card with something similar to the following? “To name, happy birthday, from name.”

Think about a time when you also received a card with carefully chosen words and a handwritten message. Did you feel a difference?

Handwritten messages in a corporate greeting card allow for a personal touch that a digital world lacks. The effort put into choosing each word and expressing genuine sentiments demonstrates a level of thoughtfulness, that goes beyond the usual business exchanges. This thoughtfulness can drive sense of authenticity and build positive relationships.

Stage 3 – Sending Your Card

The third stage is sending the card. When sending cards it is a form of communication, showing gratitude, and wishing the recipient well. However, many people send greeting cards for different reasons. For instance, the majority of card purchasers are women who often send cards to their friends, family or partners to strengthen relationships.

However, regardless of the occasion – it is important to consider other times which may not be expected to send a card, like ‘just checking in’. This is because this cultivates a sense of surprise and appreciation which can in turn evoke an added layer of joy and leave a lasting impression.

Stage 4 – Receiving a Greeting Card

The last and final destination is the recipient, when you receive a card.

When a person receives a personalised greeting card, the Limbic system of the brain is activated. This portion of your brain is responsible for generating emotional responses. You feel loved and special when you receive a greeting card and it makes you emotional and happy.

Studies have proved that receiving a customised card generates a stronger emotional response when compared to receiving an ordinary store-bought card. As technology advances, we are starting to forget the importance of sending physical notes and letters. We think, why send a letter or a card when you can say all of that in an email?

An email is never going to stimulate your emotions the way a physical handmade card will. It’s about the effort and time that you put into it. The recipient is going to notice that you went out of your way to appreciate them.
